The New Jersey Coalition of Automotive Retailers (NJ CAR) is pleased to share our 2026 Economic Impact Study, which highlights the vital role New Jersey’s local franchised dealerships play in driving the State’s economy and supporting its communities.

Last year, nearly 540 franchised neighborhood new car and truck dealerships across New Jersey generated $43.8 billion, sold nearly 444,000 vehicles, and paid $2.1 billion in state and local taxes. These local businesses spend every day impacting the communities they serve by fueling the neighborhoods where they live and work.

New Jersey’s franchised dealers are proud to directly employ and support nearly 74,000 jobs, averaging 72 employees per dealership, creating a major community pillar that supports the State’s economy. They also provide $3.62 billion in annual compensation to the hardworking men and women whose local, good-paying jobs can’t be outsourced. Giving back to the community is a way of life for New Jersey’s franchised new car and truck dealers who annually donate over $26 million to local charitable organizations.

These statistics alone help make the auto retail industry a powerhouse that contributes substantially to the Garden State’s vitality. Despite affordability hardships perpetuated by persistent inflation and roller-coaster tariffs, the auto retail sector has held fast to its role as a critical economic anchor in the Garden State.

Please take a few moments to review the enclosed study and consider the significance of this industry on New Jersey’s economy and its surrounding communities.
