Help Support Literacy by Serving as a Driven To Read Drop-Off Site

Sep 27, 2006

id you know that four out of ten adults in New Jersey can’t read, write, speak or understand English well enough to act on basic directions, whether it’s the local newspaper or instructions on mixing cleaning solutions. That statistic is startling.

NJCAR wants to encourage all dealer members to participate in the Driven to Read Campaign to collect children’s books that will be distributed by local Rotary Clubs. The objective of this program, created by Mary Jane Salvato, General Manager at Colonial Motors in Somerville, is to get books to various organizations serving underprivileged children in your communities and to help promote reading.

This is not a request for a financial donation. Instead, we invite dealerships to pledge their support by volunteering to serve as a drop-off location for members of their community to donate children’s books between November 1 and December 31, 2006.

NJCAR will promote the dealership involvement by posting a list of participating dealers on the public side of our website, which will build traffic in the showrooms of participating dealerships. We also encourage participants to draw additional notice to the campaign by designating a vehicle trunk or pickup bed as the collection point for all donated books.

By committing to this worthwhile cause, participating dealerships will help fight a serious problem in NewJersey and increase public awareness. This is a wonderful (and inexpensive) way for dealerships to show their commitment to the welfare of their local community.

Simply fill out the Participation Formand return it to NJCAR by October 6, 2006. You can either mail the form to NJCAR or fax it to 609.883.1093. We will follow up with those who respond with additional details in time for the launch of the program on November 1, 2006.
