Court Order Procedure (NJ Residents Only)

Defined as: One must apply for a court order to acquire a NJ title when the vehicle is abandoned on private property, application for duplicate title is denied due to lack of records, or when the vehicle has been purchased without proper/standard supporting documents. (See instructions for acquiring a duplicate title without proof of ownership first.)

Stipulations:
  • Petition the Superior Court in the county in which you reside to get a Court Order directing the NJ MVC to issue a title directly into your name. The year, make, and full vehicle identification number of the vehicle must be included. For a boat include the year, make, length and full hull identification number.

  • The order must be signed by the judge and certified by the court as being a true copy. (MVC requires the original certified copy.)

  • After the certified copy is received you may apply to NJ MVC for title.

  • Transaction handled through mail only.
Required Paperwork:
  1. Original certified Court Order.
  2. ISM/SS-7 Application for Certificate of Ownership for vehicle or ISM/SS-27 Application for Certificate of Vessel or Hull for boat.
  3. A pencil tracing of the vehicle / hull identification number. (ISM/SS-321 only to be used if unable to provide pencil tracing, due to location of VIN plate.)
  4. LS-240 Sales Tax card.
  5. $20.00 title fee or $40.00 if with lien.
  6. 6% sales tax if applicable.
