Senator Trent Lott (R-Miss.) introduced Bill S. 3707 recently, which would require insurance companies to make total-loss information commercially available to the public. If passed, this bill will help protect consumers (and dealerships) from purchasing flood and other salvage vehicles.

This approach uses existing technology to focus on the VINs (Vehicle Identification Numbers) of totaled vehicles, and would require auto insurance companies to make commercially available VIN-based information that they already collect.
