2006 Student Technical Competition Held in Union

Mar 01, 2006

The 2006 NJCAR Student Technical Competition was recently held at the Union Campus of Lincoln Technical Schools. Seventeen students, representing five schools, competed in this year’s event.

The automotive staff at Lincoln Tech designed a challenging, hands-on competition for the students, which complemented a 75-question ASE-style written test. During the competition, students rotated through three shop stations. The first required the students to take precision measurements using standard measurement tools. The second was an electrical diagnostics challenge, which included the schematic of an electrical system fault on a simulation board, while the third station required the students to perform an on-car starter and alternator test.

All three stations closely resembled the design of the national competition. The hands-on portion of the contest proved to be quite challenging to all of the competitors.

When the results were tabulated, the highest combined scores were achieved by two students from Hunterdon County Polytech, Richard Dean and Jack Endress, who will compete as Team Buick in the GNYADA national competition. NJCAR will sponsor Richard and Jack’s attendance at the competition. Flemington Buick Pontiac GMC and Service Director John Villamil will also help Richard and Jack prepare for the competition. A third Hunterdon County Polytech student, Amber Borkan, the only female in the event, also scored well and will serve as the first alternate for the national competition.

In addition to hosting the event at a Lincoln Technical School, Lincoln Educational Services generously provided scholarship certificates worth $1,000 to every student participating in the competition, $2,500 scholarships to the segment winners, and $10,000 scholarships to the two overall winners. The staff at the Union Campus also awarded the top three students hand-held diagnostic scanners.

Please join us in congratulating Richard, Jack and Amber, as well as all of the students who participated in the 2006 NJCAR Student Technical Competition.
