2017 Gubernatorial And Legislative Elections Grab Some Early Headlines

Significant developments occurred in the Democratic race for the 2017 nomination for Governor last week. Former Ambassador and Goldman Sachs Executive Phil Murphy has secured the support of several Democratic Party leaders and appears likely to be the Democratic Nominee.

Senate President Stephen Sweeney announced that he would not be running for Governor. In a statement, Sweeney said that he will run for re-election to the Senate and looks forward to being chosen by his colleagues to continue as Senate President in 2017.

Recently, Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, who was expected to run, announced that he would be running for re-election as Mayor of Jersey City and endorsed Murphy. Senator Raymond Lesniak and Assemblyman John Wisniewski are still contemplating gubernatorial runs.

On the Republican side, Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli announced this week that he is a candidate for Governor. Lieutenant Governor Kim Guagagno is expected to run but has not yet announced her intentions.
