Nearly 10% Of Vehicles On The Road Have Been Recalled

Jul 08, 2014

According to recent press reports, auto manufacturers have recalled more than 25 million vehicles so far in 2014, with new recalls announced almost weekly. The industry is well ahead of the pace to shatter the record of nearly 31 million vehicles recalled in 2004. The recalls range from incorrectly stated tire pressure on a sticker to potentially serious safety concerns and everything in between, but manufacturers want to avoid any claim that they were overlooking potential vehicle problems.IHS Automotive estimates that there were 252.7 million vehicles in operation in the U.S. at the start of 2014. This would mean that roughly 1 in 10 vehicles was part of some recall notice. Reports indicate that many of the vehicles recalled this year are older models that should have been recalled much earlier.2014 currently ranks as the third largest number of recalls in history and there are few signs that the pace will slow down. With congressional probes, criminal investigations, substantial National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) fines, potentially huge settlements to affected consumers and public relations headaches, auto manufacturers are likely to remain overly cautious and will continue issuing recall for even the slightest error.
