T

he NJ CAR-backed franchise bill (A2035/S927) was passed by the Assembly on Monday, June 16, 2014, with a vote of 66-2 after having been released from the Assembly Commerce & Economic Development Committee on Thursday, June 5, 2014 by a unanimous 10-0 vote. These overwhelmingly positive votes came, despite vigorous and often angry opposition from automakers. The legislation is expected to be heard by the Senate Commerce Committee within the next week. NJCAR is pressing to have the bill on Governor Christie’s desk by the end of the month.

It is critical dealers are aware of the importance of the legislation to maintain a level playing field with the OEMs. Nearly every manufacturer has reached out to their dealers in an attempt to turn them against this bill using misinformation and fear tactics to intimidate dealers to fight AGAINST their own best interests. The manufacturers know they can’t beat the dealers at the State House, but dealers can beat themselves, if they fail to work together. Working together, New Jersey new car and truck dealers will successfully strengthen their protections and create a level the playing field with the manufacturers.
