Mailing Costs Will Increase Beginning January 26, 2014

The cost to mail a first-class letter in the United States will rise to 49 cents beginning January26, 2014, which is an increase of three cents. The price of a first-class stamp was due to increase 1 cent this year, butthe Postal Regulatory Commission recently approved an additional two-cent increase to assist the Postal Service in recovering $2.8 billion in losses attributed to the economic downturn. The Postal Regulatory Commission also approved a 6% rate hike for bulk mail, periodicals and package service, while the cost to mail a postcard will increase by a cent, to 34 cents.The Postal Service has floated the idea of eliminating Saturday mail delivery in an effort to cut costs, but there has been little support for the proposal in Congress, which oversees the postal operations.
