It is with deep sadness and a sense of loss that we report the passing of former NJ CAR Chairman Lewis (“Lew”) D. Coleman. Lew passed away peacefully at home, following a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. Born in Clarksville, Lew grew up on the family’s farm in Lawrenceville, adjacent to what is now the Quaker Bridge Mall. He served in the Air National Guard during the Korean War. Lew began his career in automotive retail as a parts department clerk for his brothers, Earl and Reuney, at Coleman Buick in Hightstown. He is co-founder of Coleman Auto Group and has garnered many accolades over the years. He served as Chairman of NJ CAR in 1988 and was named New Jersey’s Time Magazine Quality Dealer of the Year in 1991. In addition to being a consummate salesman and business owner, Lew was a very generous individual. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Dutch Neck, serving as a Sunday school teacher, trustee, deacon and elder. Lew was an active fundraiser for his alma mater, Rider University, and for more than 28 years helped raise nearly $500,000 for Deborah Hospital. He was also involved in many charitable organizations, most recently serving on the Board of Directors of the Mercer County Boys and Girls Club. Lew was a pillar of community, holding memberships in the Ewing Lions Club, American Legion and Hightstown Elks Club. Lew is survived by his wife, Carolyn, his children Gary and Nadine Coleman, Lynn Coleman, Bruce and Genine Coleman; his grandchildren Christina and Nicholas Fells, Tara Coleman, Laura Coleman, Bradford Coleman, Paige Coleman, and Gregory Coleman; his brother and sister-in-law, Jesse and Lillian Coleman, as well as many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, October 12, 2008 at the First Presbyterian Church of Dutch Neck.
