A Look Back…Celebrating 90 Years

NJ CAR traces its history back to 1918 and the creation of the New Jersey Automotive Trade Association (NJATA). NJATA and NATA relied heavily on each other for more than 25 years, until 1944, when two separate dues structures were introduced.

In 1947, the State association, NJATA, was official incorporated and remained that way for twenty years. In 1967, the name was changed to the New Jersey Automobile Dealers Association (NJADA) and finally to its current name, New Jersey Coalition of Automotive Retailers (NJ CAR), Inc., in 1995.

· The 10^th Annual Newark Automobile Show was held in 1918, the year NJ CAR’s predecessor was founded

· The NJATA issued a document entitled “Winning the War” in 1918.

· In 1920, the price to enter the Newark Automobile Show was increased from $.50 to $.75, including the War Tax.

· According to minutes from June 1920, dealers discussed how much they paid mechanics. The going rate was between $1.25 and $1.50 Per Hour.
