Driven To Read Program Collects 35,000+ Books in 2007

Jan 01, 2008

Children throughout New Jersey will have access to more than 35,000 books, thanks to the efforts of the 120 New Jersey new car and truck retailers who opened their showrooms to support the 2nd Annual Driven To Read Campaign. Dealerships from throughout the State served as drop-off points for donated new and “gently used” children’s books, which are currently being distributed to a variety of children and literacy awareness groups, as well as schools and libraries all around the State.

The objective of the Program, created by Mary Jane Salvato, General Manager at Colonial Motors in Somerville, was to get books to various organizations serving underprivileged children in communities throughout New Jersey and to help promote reading. The Program was a success on both counts.

This year’s Driven to Read Program, which ran from October 1 through November 30, 2007, not only benefited children throughout New Jersey, but serves as a great example of the retail automotive industry’s dedication to the communities in which they operate. By committing to this worthwhile cause, participating dealerships are helping to fight a serious literacy problem in NewJersey and are increasing public awareness of the problem.

NJ CAR would like to thank all of the dealers who participated in this year’s campaign, as well as their employees, who helped make the 2007 Driven To Read Program a tremendous success.
